Carlow, Ireland – 19 April 2024
The EPP Group stand alongside farmers in facing the challenges of today, while building a resilient and sustainable agricultural sector for the future. We want to modernise agriculture and make it sustainable, but we want to do so with the farmers, not against them. And Ireland is a great example for that. The EPP4Farmers event in Carlow will bring together EPP members, farmers and representatives of agricultural associations to have a closer look on how to support agriculture and European farmers, while still being sustainable and protecting our natural areas.
Farmers are the boots on the ground. They are the ones who put food on the table and support our major export industries, but also they’re the ones who can deliver the vital transition to sustainability. But they need have to be given the right tools and opportunities. We need to secure family farm incomes and pay our farmers to deliver on both our food security and sustainability. Farming is more than just a livelihood, it is a rich part of our history and even has played a pivotal role in shaping the Irish landscape.
Farmers are custodians of our land and play a vital role in addressing climate challenges. They understand the need to adapt and are willing to play their part in protecting nature and safeguarding biodiversity. However, their voice has been underrepresented at EU policymaking level. We in the EPP advocate for increased dialogue, a fair income and the alleviation of regulatory burdens. It’s time to acknowledge and respect the invaluable contribution of our farmers.
The future of sustainable agriculture means working with our farmers to develop a long-term plan that is workable for them and their families, while meeting our collective obligations in preserving our land for future generations. The goal is always and should always be rooted in creating a sustainable agriculture sector that is built for us all, not just some.
